The International Potato Center (CIP) is searching 3 outstanding and experienced candidate as Senior Research Associate and/or Research Associate to monitor project’s implementation of our hosted organization, the Wyss Academy for Nature.
Based on the experience, skills, and performance during the interview, any of the two positions can be offered.
The Wyss Academy for Nature (WA) at the University of Bern’s vision is to achieve a just and sustainable world in which nature conservation and human wellbeing reinforce each other. We are a place of innovation, where research, business, policymakers, practitioners and communities come together to co-design solutions for sustainable futures. Our goal is to research, develop, and implement innovative solutions to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss, land use change and rising inequality by connecting technical, social, economic, institutional and policy innovations at the interface of nature and people. The WA comprises four regional hubs, one each in Europe (Switzerland), South America (Peru), East Africa (Kenya), and Southeast Asia (Laos).
About the role: the selected candidates will contribute to different interdisciplinary research projects (ID) developed by the Wyss Academy for Nature staff and partners. These 3 researchers will be based in Puerto Maldonado, Peru and report to the Scientist.
Key responsibilities:
• Contribute to the implementation of the ID projects in close coordination with the MDD scientist, Wyss Academy professors and ID project leads.
• Carry-on research activities including but not limited to qualitative data collection (e.g. in-depth and semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, document reviews) and analysis (e.g. discourse analysis); Literature research and synthesis; Collection of secondary data; Curating digital platform for knowledge exchange; Household interviews and surveys
• Participate in the collecting of data within RCTs and into the economic potential analysis
• Contribute to the partnership’s establishment and coordination, and participate in the engagement processes (e.g. multistakeholder workshops, learning events)
• Comply with applicable health and safety CIP policies and procedures.
What are we looking for?
• MSc or PhD degree in Environmental sciences, geography, sociology, anthropology, political ecology, environmental economics/finance; political science or agricultural science.
• 6-8 years performing similar functions in applied research for development / conservation.
• Experience with data collection and carry out research in one of the fields mentioned in Education.
• Experience working with indigenous organizations and communities in Amazon
• Experience with qualitative social science methods such as semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and qualitative data analysis
• Experience with mixed methods.
• Experience with participatory methods and stakeholder engagement processes
• Experience with analyzing effect interventions on SDGs
• Experience with social network analysis
• Experience with digital platforms for knowledge exchange.
• Experience working in Peruvian Amazon is an asset.
• Advanced statistical skills working with R, Python and/or Stata.
• Knowledge of Geospatial tools: GIS (ArcMap, QGIS).
• Excellent communication skills and fluency in Spanish and English both written and oral.
