The International Potato Center (CIP) is searching an outstanding and experienced candidate as Scientist or Associate Scientist to monitor project’s implementation of our hosted organization, the Wyss Academy for Nature.

Based on the experience, skills, and performance during the interview, any of the two positions can be offered.

The Wyss Academy for Nature (WA) at the University of Bern’s vision is to achieve a just and sustainable world in which nature conservation and human wellbeing reinforce each other. Our goal is to research, develop, and implement innovative solutions to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss, land use change and rising inequality by connecting technical, social, economic, institutional and policy innovations at the interface of nature and people. The WA comprises four regional hubs, one each in Europe (Switzerland), South America (Peru), East Africa (Kenya), and Southeast Asia (Laos).

About the role: the selected candidate will lead a team of researchers that contribute to a series of interdisciplinary research projects (ID) developed by the Wyss Academy for Nature staff and partners. Scientist or Associate Scientist will be based in Puerto Maldonado, Peru and report to the Senior Scientific Advisor for the Regional Stewardship Hub South America.

Key responsibilities:
• Contribute to the implementation of the ID projects in close coordination with Wyss Academy professors and ID project leads.
• Provide support to the ID projects in establishing and coordinating potential partnerships (e.g. indigenous organizations, regional and national governmental agencies, civil society), and engaging with key stakeholders (e.g. multistakeholder workshops, learning events)
• Supervise the day-to-day activities of the MDD research team related to qualitative data collection (e.g. in-depth and semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, document reviews) and analysis (e.g. discourse analysis); Literature research and synthesis; Secondary data collection; Digital platform curation (I.e., for knowledge exchange); Household interviews and surveys.
• Contribute to setting up and collecting data within RCTs and economic potential analysis
• Comply with applicable health and safety CIP policies and procedures.

What are we looking for?
• PhD degree in Environmental sciences, geography, environmental economics/finance; political science, agricultural sciences or other related sciences.
• 8-10+ years performing similar functions in applied research for development / conservation.
• Experience in team and project management.
• Experience working with (social) enterprises and / or large policy interventions is an asset.
• Experience with mixed methods.
• Experience working in Peruvian Amazon is an asset.
• Experience on knowledge management is an asset.
• Advanced statistical skills working with R, Python and/or Stata.
• Knowledge of Geospatial tools: GIS (ArcMap, QGIS).
• Interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary skills and experience.
• Good record of on scientific publications.
• Excellent communication skills and fluency in Spanish and English both written and oral.
